As the light wanes and we head towards the winter solstice, I am cautiously surrendering to rest. 2021 has been an incredibly full and fruitful year of re-imagining, fantastical envisioning, and sweet collaborations. I am currently catching my breath, taking time to metabolize the shifts and movements that have been teaching me so much about discernment.
This autumn brought many stories of loss and death, and what has stood out in particular are the stories of the tangible stuff that lingers from people after they have moved on. I have been in a deep inquiry about the stuff that we carry through life, like heirloom pictures, trinkets, antiques, letters, cards, art, journals, and fantasizing about being free from all this stuff.
So I've been combing through a couple of old piles of precious things, drastically pairing it all down and apprehensively letting go of things I covet. I am painfully sentimental for the meaning and story things and places can hold. As I opened a time capsule of a box from my basement, I was surprised and entertained by the contents and also struck by waves of grief and nostalgia. As I was placing items in various moving-on piles, I feared that without certain physical tangible evidence of what once was, might I forget parts of me? While I have sadness over not having certain things anymore, I am also savoring the sweet visceral relief that comes with any unburdening, feeling free and excited by these new precious voids.
In my exploration of grief, I've been fascinated by the intersection of the health impacts of nature and the healing benefits of mourning and how practices of acknowledgement specifically support our heart function and overall health. While we can hit the re-set button anytime, any day and as often as needed, we are in an exceptionally potent time for re-setting, re-starting and re-freshing. Come lean into the invigorating winter ocean air with me on the first morning of 2022.
